. >>> we're going to run you through with some video. help on the way from the west coast, from california. dozens of power trucks loaded on to giant air force cargo planes to help with power restoration. those things amazingly flying across the country all the way from california. the situation remains desperate in many neighborhoods in the tri-state area. these are pictures from this morning on staten island. there is virtually no power on the island. destruction is widespread. the secretary of homeland security janet napolitano will visit today. staten island is where the new york marathon will start on sunday. more subway service returning to manhattan, but not below 42nd street where power is still out in wide parts of the city south of that parallel. city officials say they may have to evacuate the marine life from the massive new york city aquarium based in brooklyn. the death toll from the storm nearing the 100 mark. despite the damage in atlantic city, that town's famous casinos are open again and they are conflicting reports about when power will be restored in manhattan. hundred

and crews from california to try to help new york clean up sandy. 69 vehicles from southern california were flown in from the west coast. they also sent generators and water pumps to help with clean-ups. the navy will be on stand by in case the state government asks for them help. and now, picking up the pieces from sandy. staten island is a 60 square mile portion of new york city and it suffered some of the worst devastation from the storm. 19 of the city's deaths happened on staten island and today, i toured some of the hardest hit areas and spoke with residents just beginning to pick up the piecing of their shattered lives. this is quincy avenue and you still can't get close to house number 845. that's where barbara and her son, christopher, barely survived the storm. >> we stayed 11 hour onss on the roof. we kept yelling help to everyone we see. nobody was coming. nobody. >> their neighborhood, destroyed. the water rose feet in just minutes. they escaped with their lives, but suffered unimaginable loss. >> we were told the next day, looking for my sister, she was found dead in her apart

of the northeast, it's now a recovery mission. and yesterday california military planes were loaded with utility vehicles ready to be shipped into new york. an army of some 50,000 utility workers from across the country, even canada, being deployed to the region to help in the massive project to restore power which will take weeks. three navy warships are anchored off the northeast coast to help with the relief effort. in new jersey, military trucks are being deployed to operate as polling places on election day in the hardest-hit communities still remain without power. now, the good news does trickle out slowly. today amtrak will begin offering limited service between new york city and boston. and new jersey transit will also start moving today with limited service. the new york subway system continues to make advances. the "m" train linking queens to manhattan just started running, but there are still no trains running below 34th street where half of manhattan remains in the dark. so the millions of new yorkers who depend on subways, they're now waiting in those long lines for buses. for those
